Here is a quick WIP render of my set of my Final project for my MA in Character Animation.

I am going for a Paddington Bear type of set design, so that the colourful characters will be the main focus of the Film.

Idea 1

So as this module is about pre production, I had to come up with some stories. I have an old idea that I have been saving for some time, but realise it needs some cutting down if it was to be achievable for this module. If I was to make this full length we could be looking at 3-5 minutes.

So here is the animatic I got together for this idea.

I did some quick mock ups of some props etc for the idea to try and get a head start so I can start animation as soon as possible.

The first image is a Kango Drill I created in 3ds Max. In my previous post I also did a grass test with a quick model of a tree.

I have above an earlier test of just the grass. Done in 3ds Max using the scatter tool.

Here is a quick test I did for my Final Project. Not going to go into the story just yet, but there is a tree involved, so I was playing around with creating my scene wiht some grass and the tree.

This is the finished version of my 2 person dialogue assignment. I probably spent most of my time on this over the other two tasks as I see this as a potential show reel piece. I wanted to achieve a lot more with this however. I feel I could bring this up to a much higher standard of acting if I was to put more time into the detail of the acting. The facial animation in particular needs a lot of work if I am to put this onto my reel. Along with some serious time spent on the splines of both characters.

So here is the version I handed in for the module.

Now that i've finished the module, I've gotten round to uploading my animations. For the first task, we had to model a character greeting an off screen character.

So for my piece, I aniamted a worker in the office greeting someone off screen to the left. However to add an obstacle, I added a fly to the scene. The fly lands on his nose and doesn't want to leave.

As my character is a nice guy, he doesn't wnat to kill the fly. So he tries shaking it off and blowing at it. But to no avail.

With a quick change of mood, or lack of patience he flicks the fly away and continues on with his day, saying hello to someone on the way.

So below is the final version for hand in, although I feel it still needs some work to be a completed piece.

Mime Final

So I've gotten to a stage where I have little time left and need to delegate what time I have left to each project. So I focused on the Mime last night as I saw that as the one that needed the least amount of love. I do think that this could do with a lot more work as it is nowhere near the standard I would like to go on my Reel. There are a few too many static poses and some refinement is needed throughout. However I do think that it is strong enough for me to move onto the other two projects.

So here is the final 'Mime' animation for hand in. Although I will definitely be going back to this to make it a more accomplished and finished show reel piece.

Re-work of Greeting & splines

After a lot of focus on the 2 person Dialogue (http://briankavanagh.blogspot.com/2010/04/2-person-dialogue-splining-wip.html) and Mime Animations ( http://briankavanagh.blogspot.com/2010/04/mime-splines.html ), I have finally gotten back to the Greeting Animation. Upon going back to this I went through the animation and made a list of what had to be done to get it finished.

The last time I showed it in class, it was pointed out that the character tries to blow the fly away to his front rather than blowing in an upward fashion. So this was my first major area of focus. I decided that naturally someone would use the file to get rid of the fly. Some people would just kill it but others would just kill the fly. My character fall under let the fly live. But he would also only have a limit to how long he would allow the fly a chance to fly away.

So with this in mind, I decided to get rid of the file. Instead he would try to first shake the fly off, then blow it off, as he is a softy and doesn't want to kill the fly. However his attitude changes once he can't get rid of the fly. So with a turn of expression, he simply flicks the fly away with his finger. Then with a 'You deserved that!' expression, he quickly moves on with his day forgetting all about the fly.

There was also an issue with the walk of the character, the walk on was a 'bit funny' as quoted by Penny. So with this in consideration I thought I'd take a new and fresh approach to the beginning of the sequence.

Below is a playblast of what I have done so far, without a new opening sequence as of yet.

Mime Splines

So, after timing out and changing everything to splines, I've started focusing on the hips and getting all my curves flowing. That is were I am at right now as regarding my polishing etc. after I get this pass done I will focus on the facial animation.

After Tuesdays drop in session it was brought up that the beginning was a bit cliché. So I went back to the drawing board and spent a while thinking of what to do to make my mime look like he is thinking. Little did I think to myself that I was actually doing exactly what I wanted the character to do 'Thinking'. So I came up with the scratching of the temple and hand on the chin idea. At the moment they need a bit of refinement but I think the idea is working a lot better and a lot more natural than before with the sigh.

secondary character

Tonight I've been focusing on the background character in my '2 person dialogue'.
At first I had his left arm animated with FK when in blocking, but ran into some issues when I splined it. So I changed it to IK and for some reason the elbow control went crazy. I'd have it away so that his elbow pointed out but when the scene progressed (the arm control not moving anywhere) the elbow went up into the sky in a very unnatural pose.

So I had to simplify the action on that left arm, but its now a bit floaty. For the rest of him, I worked into the right arms movement across the head and settled with a little scratching action to add to his nervousness and thought process. Although this is a bit of a stereotype I do feel its worked well.

I plan on adding in a double take on the primary character when he sees him scratching and shifting.

2 person dialogue Splining WIP

I have been working through a pass of splines for my 2 person dialogue. The secondary character needs a bit more blocking throughout but his key poses are there or there abouts.

My tutor noticed that the slap was a bit weak for the anger he should have. Along with this a second of realisation before he hits him would sell it more. A pause in between the sentence 'its me, I've been sleeping with your wife' would be better with a pause, so that it reads 'Its me..........I've been sleeping with your wife'. I think this will add a bit of texture to the audio and in turn the animation (adding more thinking).

I'll get to this later in the week before hand in on friday. But for now here is my WIP splines, I just go through it and spline a section at a time rather than spline everything at once. I think this allows me to nail the timing and add in some more blocking if needs be, along with eliminating any floaty transitions.

This will need a few more passes once i'm through this one. A lot of polishing needed everywhere along with some serious focus on the facial animation.

Splining of Mime Animation

This week I started splining out my Mime Animation. At the moment there are still some transitions that need some work. So I have splined s small section for now and am going to get my transitions right before I finish splining. There are also a few weight/floaty issues that appeared once I started splining. The head worked well in stepped mode but needed to be adjusted once in spline mode.

I have finally got round to posting a full blocked version of my 2 person dialogue. In this piece we have 2 characters, one bringing the other some bad news. In this case Tim telling his friend that he is sleeping with his wife.

This sound clip is a edited version of an episode of 'friends', starring Billy Crystal and Robin Williams.

We did get the chance to work with actors for this piece in a sound booth to record the sound ourselves. However upon doing this I felt that the original piece was a lot closer to what I wanted. It was more flexible to play with from the finished animation that I saw in my head.

I've made some changes to my Mime Animation, Mainly at the start. I have added a sequence of him reeling in the fishing line just to make sure that it reads that he is fishing. Along with that I have added in an emotion change. Firstly sad because he hasn't caught anything, then he becomes excited as he realises he has an audience. The first casting of the line is more exaggerated also.

Iv'e added some more elements of fishing, a gradual development of him pulling in the rod as it gets harder an harder.

Over all I feel the 'story' as a whole works better now with the opening and exaggeration of the fishing. Along with some more eye contact to the audience.

Here is the first pass on my Greeting animation, in class today it was discussed to get more into the character as well as make area's more readable. So acting on that i've moved the camera in and put some animation into his eyes so that we see he is looking around to see who is looking at him.

Mime: 2nd Pass Blocking

So, I have been working on my Mime Animation over the past few days. Have been working particularly on the ending which was a bit tricky to get. In this section of the animation the Mime is pulling/reeling in a large fish. In all I have three pulls of the rod and some winding of the fishing line. I think this pulling action has given some good anticipation to the finale of him shooting off screen in the opposite direction.

So here is the first draft of my sequence. Just some story telling poses, a few breakdowns and some timing.

2 person Dialogue

Task 3 of my Acting for Animation is a 2 person dialogue. One character is to bring good/bad news to the other character.

I have chosen a sequence of Robin Williams and Billy Crystal in an episode of 'Friends'. In this episode Billy Crystals Character (Tim) reveals to Robin Williams' Character that he is sleeping with his wife.

There is obvious conflict straight away in a sequence such as this, where a friend has broken the trust of another by sleeping with his wife. What will this do to the friendship? Could they work through this?

There are a lot of comedic lines in this dialogue which I think will help deliver a nice contrasting animated piece. A change in emotion as well as a change in the mood of the scene.

Character Profiles:

These are two close friends who have known each other for a very long time, so they both know how one another thinks and reacts. For example when they talk about the feeling you get when you go bowling.

One (Robin Williams) is in love with his wife, but is worried that she is sleeping with another man. He's very nervous about the situation and looks to Tim (Billy Crystal) for support. A very emotional character who has had this thought playing on his mind for some time now and he finally decides to talk to someone about his problems.

Tim on the other hand is a very cool, calm and caring character, who values his friendship but has the guilt of sleeping with his best friends wife. He show's some bravery in telling his friend and facing the music but realises this may end the friendship.

Environment:

I see this being set in a restaurant/Bar type of environment. An area where two men would meet to talk or to relax. This would make it more comfortable for someone to confide in a friend and to speak their mind.

Mime planning & Reference

This is a Lowmax rig I will be using for animating a Mime animation. We are to animate a sequence without the use of dialogue for 10 seconds.

In my sequence my Mime Character will be fishing. He will interact with the camera, kind of like what you see on a children's show such as pocoyo, except without the narration.

Task 1 was a quick presentation based on Body Language of a Live Action Character and an Animated Character.

Task 2 is An animation of a Character walking on screen and greeting an off screen character.

So to begin I'm working on my character profile and my general planning of the scene.

My Character Profile:

He is a people person

My scenario is:

Mike has just left his boss' office after his routine weekly meeting, so is not in a state of worry or shock, is just his calm self.

On the way to his desk he got himself a coffee.

So while walking to his desk coffee in hand he is also reading the weekly reports he just got off his boss. The reports are positive so he is not in a bad mood or thinking too much about them, just reading through.

He walks past a colleague and says hello/good morning, but keeps walking.

His phone then rings and he stops to answer it, closing the file and putting it under his arm, and walks off screen.

Final Hand in Animations

I handed in my assignments on Wed fully rendered etc.

Was happy with sections of both pieces, wish i could have added some more subtlety to the Presenter Sequence, as well as the audio being off by about a frame. The main area I wasw happy with was when he was telling us its 'small, neat' etc. Also I think the eye ball he pulls from under the table could have been a bit easier to see.

As far as the singing animation goes, my main concern is the left arm at some periods. I needed some attention along with some offsetting on the timing of the whole character.

These are all things I will work into at a later stage to get it nice for my Show Reel.

Animation Practice Two is now in full swing. We have to complete Three animation tests for the start of Feb. These are, a simple Lipsync (head Only), a song and Dance routine and a Presenter type sequence. I have chosen the James Brown sequence for the song and dance, the song is a segment of a live performance of 'I feel Good'.

For the Animatic, I tried to keep within the world of James Brown and his style of Performance.

Animation_Task_6_Weight_Lift

Tomorrow is deadline day and I just wanted to post up a new iteration of my 'Weight Lift'. This version is my first pass through with my curves smooth. Ive started some animation on the fingers and re adjusted some of the timing. As I worked in stepped mode I found alot of keys were not needed, particularly on the box itself. Which became very gittery once I applied the curves to it.

Hopefully i'll have another few passes applied by Hand In. I want to work on the facial stuff too to add some character to the piece.

Bouncin' Ball with a Tail!

Finally got around to finishing my bouncing Ball with a tail for my Uni Module. Ive adopted some feedback I got on 'Strut Your Reel', which is an online forum for animation,from Andy Seredy and Michael Mulock.

They suggested a technique I try for getting over shoot and settle in my tail, particularly when the ball is on the box. You can view the feedback/technique Andy gave me on the forum at:

I found this technique really helpful and helped my animation alot through a simple action.

So here is the finished piece below. Ive two versions one with the tail mesh and one without as I am having some skinning issues. However for the purpose of the Hand in I have rendered off both as I may not have time to finish the skinning of the tail.

Final iteration of Personality Walk

Animation Task 3 latest

This is the latest version of my animated bouncing ball with tail. I got some pretty good feedback from my class and tutor regarding my animation. However some additional points were made to make it better. One was to add a bit of reaction on top of the box(a fright) and another was to maybe give the tail a lillte wiggle when held still.

Hopefully I can add some of these in to push the animation further.

Animation Task 3 'Bouncing ball with Tail'

The third task in our Animation module requires us to animate a bouncing ball with a tail. The ball must jump/bounce up onto a box and back off again. The ball will have a personality so therefore will be self driven.

For my ball i chose a Dog and his tail would wag and react to his emotions.

Here is a WIP clip that will be submitted as part of this weeks 'weekles'. Hoping for some strong and constructive criticism.

Bouncing Balls.

For the two bouncing balls I chose a Bowling Ball and a rubber ping pong ball (like the ones int he sony advert). The initial reaction to my Bouncing Balls, was that they both were a little self driven when the task is purely form a physics point of view.

This will have to be addressed for the hand in. I feel that if I work on the arcs and timing a bit more I will get the force of a 'thrown' ball rather than a self driven ball.

The Second ball, is a lot smaller than the bowling ball, so it will have more zip to it. Again at the weeklies session I recieved feedback, which stated that this ball was too self driven.

The settle on the end of this ball is one of the positives to this animation. But the rest does need alot more work if it is to achieve the criteria in the brief.

There is alot of floatiness going on in the arcs of the ball as well as some timing issues.

I've been working away today on a second pass of my animation. Was advised to work in step mode initally to get my timing right early on. Finally got around to doing some acting animation again. So Ive uploaded my first blocking pass of this animation below. The general idea is that this guy is pretty pissed off and is talking to his pet fish in the bowl, Hopefully the irony adds some comedy to the piece.

So I've finished a proxy mesh for my torso for my character for my Final Year Project and here is a quick test I did with that rig. Basically I wanted ,instead of your basic walk cycle, to do something that would be relevant to my character. So i went for a scratch on the arm pit!. Incase you didnt know my character is a hung over mess, and we all know when men are alone and hung over the scratch and fart and all the rest of that stuff. So it made sense for me to get to know my character aswell as practicing some animation (AT LAST!). So finally the ball is rolling, only 12 weeks to get a minute of this story animated!!

And finally my last post of the day, My sink. This was actually fun to model, as I think it has a really nice shape to it. The taps on the other hand were a little tricky but i think ive achieved a good cartoon look to my design along with sticking to my edged feel. As you can see ive applied a lattice to the sink in the front view, i think this has gone a long way to adding character to my set design and will help with my overall look and feel to my project. After all my character will be spending almost all of his time in front of this sink.

Moving on with my set design too. Ive managed to get my sink and medicine cabinet modelled so that when i finish my rigging i can finally move onto the fun part of this project ANIMATING!! So here's a few basic renders of my models. Take a gander and feel free to leave some comments. Going for a really stylized feel with my set. This is to match my characters design of sharp edges and squared off feel to it.
The sliding door is rigged up and fully functional. Again just as I did with my character I placed simple materials onto the models for illustrative purposes.

So finally got round to posting some renders of my models. Heres a working progress version of my character. Bare in mind ive only thrown a few materials onto the character and that is not a final texture. Its just to give me an idea of what he will look like. As far as riggin goes, he's nearly there just workin into the face at the moment. Using my new best friend, paramater controls in 3ds max.

Ok so here is my animatic for my short. its a bit long but i think its nearly there. a few lose parts that need to be brought together but all in all i think its at a stage where any new adjustments can be done in the animation stage.
